The vibe

Incorporated in 1870, Laurel is one of the region’s older railroad towns — and it shows in the best way: a historic Main Street with local shops and cafes, the annual Main Street Festival, and Laurel Park thoroughbred racing since 1911. Montpelier Mansion (National Trust site) and the Laurel Museum anchor the colonial history; Granville Gude Park (lake, paddleboats, dog park) covers weekends. The housing mixes historic farmhouses and Colonials with townhome communities (Russett, Snowden) and new construction up to ~$940K. And the geography is the pitch: ~20 miles to both DC and Baltimore — a true midpoint city.

Homes & prices

The median sold price sits near ~$510K, roughly flat year over year (+1%). By type: single-family ~$550K; townhomes ~$498K; condos from ~$175K — one of the lowest entries in the close-in Maryland market. Homes move in ~40 days. For buyers priced out of Howard County but working in either city, the value is hard to beat.

Who it’s for

Commuters splitting DC and Baltimore, first-time buyers needing a sub-$200K entry, and value hunters who want Maryland without the Bethesda premium. If a MARC ride and Main Street beat a Metro stop, Laurel works.

Getting around

MARC Camden Line at Laurel station — direct to DC’s Union Station. I-95, US-1, and the BW Parkway put both downtowns ~20 miles away. This is a commuter town by design.

Schools

Honest framing required: Laurel High School — GreatSchools 2–10 (verified) — is modest. But Laurel spans a four-county split: most of the city is Prince George’s County, while North Laurel (Howard County) feeds top-rated Howard County schools — a different universe. Which county side the home sits on changes everything; verify before you buy.

Life here

Main Street (shops, cafes, festivals), Laurel Park racing, and Montpelier Mansion for history. Granville Gude Park and the Dutch Country Farmer’s Market cover weekends; Laurel Towne Centre has the everyday retail.

Where it is

Solomia’s take

Laurel is the midpoint play — 20 miles to DC, 20 to Baltimore, MARC to Union Station, and condo entry under $200K. The four-county school split is the thing to know: North Laurel’s Howard County side is a different market than PG County Laurel. Buy the right side and the value is exceptional.
