Neighborhood guide · Washington, DC
Dupont Circle
DC’s most walkable historic neighborhood — Embassy Row mansions, a beloved fountain, and rowhouses steps from the Red Line.
The vibe
Dupont Circle grew around its namesake traffic circle and fountain — and around Massachusetts Avenue’s Embassy Row, where Gilded Age mansions became embassies. It’s long been one of DC’s most welcoming neighborhoods, with a vibrant community spirit that shows in its bookshops, galleries, and sidewalk cafes. The result is one of the city’s most layered places: Beaux-Arts rowhouses, bookstore cafes, gallery nights, and a farmers market that has run every Sunday for decades.
Homes & prices
The headline median near $485K (Q3 2026) is heavily condo-weighted — this is a tale of two markets. Condos range from the $350s for studios and one-bedrooms to $850K+ for larger two-bedrooms, with HOA fees in mid-rise buildings often running $500–$900 a month. Historic rowhouses and townhouses are a different world: $1.2M to $2.8M+. Know which market you’re shopping before you set a budget.
Who it’s for
Dupont is for buyers who want to live in the middle of everything — young professionals walking to downtown jobs, pied-à-terre buyers who want a lock-and-leave condo, and rowhouse lovers who value historic character over square footage. It’s not for anyone who needs a yard, a garage, or quiet streets.
Getting around
Dupont Circle station on the Red Line connects directly to Metro Center, Union Station, and Bethesda. The Walk Score runs 95 to 99 — a true Walker’s Paradise — with groceries, pharmacies, and the Metro all within about five blocks of the fountain. Farragut North (Red) and U Street (Green/Yellow) are easy walks.
Schools
DCPS options here are genuinely strong:

Life here
The Dupont Circle Farmers Market runs year-round every Sunday on 20th Street. Kramerbooks — the independent bookstore and cafe — has been a neighborhood fixture for decades. The Phillips Collection, America’s first museum of modern art, sits in a historic Georgian Revival home. The 17th Street corridor and Connecticut Avenue carry the dining and retail, with galleries and museums woven throughout.
Where it is
Solomia’s take
Dupont rewards buyers who understand the condo math. The headline prices look accessible — then the HOA hits. I run the full monthly picture (mortgage, HOA, taxes, insurance) on every condo before my clients get attached, and I steer rowhouse buyers toward the streets where the historic fabric is actually protected. In a neighborhood this layered, the block matters as much as the building.
