The vibe

Great Falls is Northern Virginia’s country estate — winding two-lane roads, horse farms, and homes set back behind mature trees on lots measured in acres, not square feet. The village center (anchored by the Old Brogue Irish Pub and a small upscale plaza) is the social hub; everything else is space, quiet, and green. It attracts people who’ve earned their privacy: executives, diplomats, and families who want land without leaving the metro area.

Homes & prices

Large single-family estates dominate — townhomes are rare here. Active listings range from about $1.05M to $16M. The median sold price sat near $1.88M in late 2025 (Redfin/Zillow), with single-family medians around $1.75M. Many properties carry a genuine equestrian character: private stables, paddocks, and riding trails. Tellingly, Zillow’s 2026 analysis found Great Falls has Virginia’s priciest “starter homes” — the only community in the state where even entry-level homes carry a median value above $1 million.

Who it’s for

Great Falls is for buyers who want land, privacy, and top schools — and accept a car-dependent life to get them. Horse people, obviously. But also anyone trading an intown townhouse for room to breathe while staying inside Fairfax County’s school system.

Getting around

This is car country — there’s no Metro station in Great Falls itself (nearest Silver Line access is via bus to Spring Hill). Driving to Dupont Circle takes about 31 minutes; Tysons Corner Center is roughly 9 miles away. Plan your life around the car, and the trade-off is space few other close-in suburbs can offer.

Schools

Fairfax County Public Schools serve the area, and they’re exceptional:

  • Langley High School — GreatSchools 10/10; Niche’s #2 best college-prep public high school in Virginia
  • Cooper Middle School — GreatSchools 10/10
  • Forestville Elementary — GreatSchools 10/10

The Langley pyramid is a genuine driver of home values here — buyers pay a measurable premium to land inside it.

Life here

Great Falls Park (National Park Service) is the crown jewel — 800 acres of dramatic Potomac waterfalls, 15+ miles of trails, and the historic Patowmack Canal ruins. The village center handles daily life: the Old Brogue for a pint, boutiques and salons at the Village Centre. Weekends mean trail rides, farmers’ markets, and the kind of stargazing you forget is possible this close to a capital city.

Where it is

Solomia’s take

Great Falls is a market of specifics: well and septic, conservation easements, horse-property zoning, flood plain along the river corridors. The listing price is only the beginning of the story — I dig into land usability, outbuilding permits, and what the lot will actually let you do before my clients fall for the acreage. At this price point, the due diligence is the service.

Market figures reflect data available October 2026 (Redfin, Oct 2025; Zillow, Nov 2025; Homes.com; FFXnow, June 2026) and move with the market. School ratings are point-in-time (GreatSchools, Niche) and change year to year — always verify assigned schools for a specific address with Fairfax County Public Schools.
