The vibe

Upper Marlboro has been the seat of Prince George’s County since 1721 — over three centuries. It began as a tobacco port on the navigable Patuxent River, was seized by British forces in 1814 on the campaign that led to the Burning of Washington, and grew deep horse-racing roots (the Maryland Jockey Club ran races south of town from the mid-1700s until 1972). Today it’s a historic small town wrapped in horse country, with a National Register residential historic district and some of the most accessible prices in the inner DMV.

Homes & prices

The median near $455K (Sep 2026, Realtor.com, $231/sq ft) — the most accessible median in this guide series. The stock is predominantly single-family homes, plus condos and townhomes; listed examples run $554K–$639K for 4-bedroom homes. About 74% of homes are owner-occupied. No verified by-type medians — the overall figure is the guide.

Who it’s for

Upper Marlboro is for buyers who want space and history at an accessible price — first-time buyers, equestrian families, and anyone who’d rather have acreage than a Metro stop. It’s less for daily downtown commuters who need transit (see below) and for school-driven buyers (see below).

Getting around

An honest note: there’s no Metro station in Upper Marlboro proper. The drive to downtown DC is about 24–25 minutes off-peak (17 miles) — longer at rush hour. Options: drive to Downtown Largo (Blue/Silver) or take the Academy commuter bus from the Equestrian Center (~46–57 min to downtown).

Schools

An honest note: schools are a consideration here, not the draw — Prince George’s County Public Schools.

Life here

The Prince George’s Equestrian Center / Show Place Arena — a 5,800-seat arena hosting horse shows, rodeos, and concerts, with stabling for 240 horses — is the landmark the town is known for. The historic downtown (National Register, 2012) holds the 1846 Gothic Revival Trinity Episcopal Church and the c. 1730 Kingston house. Six Flags America, Watkins Regional Park, and Patuxent River Park are all a short drive.

Where it is

Solomia’s take

Upper Marlboro is the price story of this whole guide series — $455K median, twenty-five minutes from downtown off-peak, in a town with three centuries of history. The trade-offs are real (no Metro, schools vary), but for buyers who work hybrid or don’t mind driving, the value is undeniable. Equestrian buyers already know; everyone else is about to find out.
